As with any other side-effects, speak to your specialist if you are experiencing any of these changes. Steroids can make you more likely to catch viral infections, such as chickenpox, shingles and measles. This is because they restrict the way your immune system reacts to viruses and bacteria. Inactivated vaccines (such as the winter flu vaccination) are considered safe for people with lymphoma; however, they might not be as effective.

Prednisolone tablets and liquid

If you do need to start hormone therapy again, you will usually have the same type as before, for at least three to six months. As well as regular PSA tests, you’ll have other blood tests to see whether the cancer is affecting other parts of your body, such as your liver, kidneys or bones. Osteoporosis is very uncommon with the types of steroids used in the treatment of lymphoma. However, in older people who have also had chemotherapy, it can increase the risk of fracture, particularly of the bones in the spine (vertebrae). If you are at an increased risk of osteoporosis, your doctors might suggest a dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) scan to keep a check on your bone density. You might also be prescribed medicines to help protect you from developing osteoporosis.

The dose you take will be gradually reduced to lower the risk of withdrawal effects. You may notice an increase in your appetite whilst you are taking steroids, so you may gain some weight. Your doctor will usually prescribe a ‘stomach protector’ medication such as Lansoprazole or Omeprazole for the course of your steroids.

How are biologics used in IBD?

It can help to change a few things about when and where you sleep. Try to go to bed and get up at the same time each day and spend some time relaxing before you go to bed. Steroids can cause a reaction called steroid induced psychosis. People can become excited, confused and imagine things that aren’t real.

Your GP will have been sent a copy of your discharge summary, including the list of medication you were prescribed on discharge from hospital. They will continue to prescribe all your medication, so please ensure you inform them if you need any repeat prescriptions. Your discharge summary should routinely state the number of days you are to take a specified dose and the date in which the dose is due to reduce.

Signs and symptoms of steroid-induced diabetes

Steroids are usually only given for a short time to quickly treat flare-ups of your condition. Depending on which condition you have and what dose you’re anabolicsteroid prescribed, you may notice an improvement in your symptoms within a few days.
